This week: Sex and Cuba - two interpreted performances

Reminder:
There are two interpreted performances this week.


The first is "Sex with Strangers" at Portland Center Stage. You can read more about it on the Facebook Event Page or at PCS. This is being interpreted by Rich Hall and KT Corlett on Thursday, October 29th at 7:30 pm at PCS. If you purchase your tickets online, use promo code SIGN to get the community discount price.



The second is "Cuba Libre" by Artists Repertory Theatre, which is being performed at the Winningstad Theatre in downtown Portland. There is more information, photos, links to captioned videos by OPB about the production available on the Facebook Event Page, or read more about it at Artists Repertory Theatre. This is being interpreted by Dot Hearn and Jayodin Mosher on Saturday, October 31st at 2:00 pm. When purchasing tickets, you want to be in Tier 2 Section C; if those are sold out, ask for Tier 1 Section C (lower numbered seats).

Oct - Dec: overview of interpreted performances

These next three months are filled with all kinds of interpreted theatre. The offerings include musicals old and new, comic books come to life, a whimsical gender-bending fantasy, a storytelling witch, the adventures of being an elf, a play where "sex is imminent," and a twisted tradition.

Below is a handy short list of upcoming interpreted performances at Portland Center Stage, Artists Repertory Theatre, Profile Theatre, and Portland Community College. Print this list and keep it in your wallet or pocket! There will be more information coming here for each production as it nears, as well as events set up in Facebook to keep you up to date with reviews, videos, more pictures and more information.

 A raging snowstorm traps strangers Olivia, an unsuccessful yet gifted 39-year-old writer, and Ethan, a tech- addicted and wildly successful young blogger, in a secluded cabin. Opposites instantly attract, and undeniable chemistry ignites. As the dawn rises, however, what could have just been a one-night-stand transforms into something more complicated when online exploits interfere with their real-life connection. Recommended for ages 16+; contains mature language, brief nudity and adult situations. Sex is imminent.

This Broadway-scale, contemporary musical features the internationally acclaimed, three-time Grammy-nominated band Tiempo Libre with a company of 21 actors, dancers and musicians in a not-to-be-missed theatrical event.

Ain't Misbehavin'

Winner of the Tony Award for Best Musical, this sassy, sultry musical celebrates the remarkable life and talents of a legendary jazz great, Fats Waller. The delightful humor and infectious energy of this exuberant jazz revue takes us from the Harlem Renaissance through World War II; Waller’s work shows a determination to grasp life’s joys, laughter and passion, even in a community shadowed by the pain of a complex American society. With permission from the authors, PCS is creating an expanded-cast version of the original production.

Usagi Yojimbo

Set in rural 16th century Japan, where danger lurks everywhere and feudal lords fight for power, Usagi Miyomoto, is a hero worshiping rabbit who yearns to become a Samurai. To do so, Usagi must leave his mother and abandon his friends while studying the ways of the samurai with an eccentric and frustrating sensei, the master swordsman Katsuichi, an aging lion. But once he receives his training, he must struggle against an old friend in a winner-take-all samurai tournament. And upon his return to his home village, he must to confront a gang of bandits, and their leader, a gigantic bear at the grave of his father. Will Usagi prevail? Come and find out, in this play adapted from Stan Sakai's beloved comic book!

Based on the true chronicles of David Sedaris’ experience as Crumpet the Elf in Macy’s Santaland display, this cult classic riffs on a few of Sedaris’ truly odd encounters with his fellow man during the height of the holiday crunch.

The Santaland Diaries is recommended for ages 14+; contains mature content and language, and the secret of Santa is exposed.



The Second City's A Christmas Carol: Twist Your Dickens

A complete send-up of the holiday classic, this adult comedy is adorned with the improvisational genius of the legendary comedy troupe The Second City, and includes zany holiday sketches, an ever-changing list of drop-in local celebrities and uproarious improv based on audience participation— it’s never the same show twice!

Twist Your Dickens is recommended for ages 14+; contains mature content, strong language, and a Dalek on a conquest for universal extermination.
