More information will be posted for individual shows and you can also check on Facebook for Interpreted Performance Events, where I will be adding reviews and photos and updates as they become available.

Summary of the Antigone Story

In preparation for viewing "Antigone Project" at Profile Theatre (interpreted performance is on Saturday, September 10th, at 2:00 pm), here is a video of an overview of the original Antigone story. "Antigone Project" is a production of five retellings of the Antigone story. Brush up on your Antigone myth and we'll see you at the theatre this coming Saturday!

Also join us for the pre-show In Dialogue performance at 1:25 pm in the Mezzanine. For this special event, Profile Theatre is proud to be partnering with Blacque Butterfly Presents on the In Dialogue Main Stage events for The Antigone Project: A Play in Five Parts.  We have collaborated to feature a series of local spoken-word artists performing in our lobby prior to each performance of the production.  Mirroring the collection of diverse voices embodied in Antigone Project, the artists are from varied backgrounds, experiences and perspectives, all of which come to bear on the profound and provocative  work that they will be sharing with our audiences. The performers for the In Dialogue event at 1:25 pm (which will be interpreted, as well as the play) will be GG Warren and Anayla Warren-Premsingh.

Shakespeare’s late, valedictory romance “The Tempest” is a tale of family betrayal, enchantment and ultimately, forgiveness. Inherently theatrical, the unfolding of the exotic, supra-human and sometimes invisible characters makes it one of the Bard’s most beguiling and entertaining stories. 

The play begins on a remote island where sorcerer Prospero, the overthrown Duke of Milan, has been exiled with his daughter Miranda. Prospero uses his learned magical powers to unhinge a powerful storm, the tempest in the story. This storm causes a shipwreck of Prospero’s usurping brother Antonio, luring him to the island along with the complicit King of Alonso of Naples. There, Prospero’s illusions bring about the revelation of Antonio’s lowly nature, the redemption of the King, and the marriage of Miranda to Alonso’s son. 

Thought by many critics to be the last play Shakespeare wrote alone, in the end, the audience is the only one who can set Prospero free from the island.

Profile Theatre's In Dialogue Staged Readings

The reading of two plays by Adrienne Kennedy on July 18-19 will be in the Artists Rep building.  The a reading of The Book of Grace by Suzan-Lori Parks on July 25-26 will be at CoHo on NW Raleigh Street. The Tuesday night performances (July 19 and July 26) will be interpreted. The tickets are free, but reservations are encouraged.

In Electra,  daughter seeks revenge upon the mother who killed her father.  Her long lost brother returns and is persuaded to commit an act of terrible violence, leaving both bereft and conflicted. This muscular, poetic and unflinching adaptation of Euripides Electra explores the the complexities of grief, vengeance and love within a family.

Drawing on Kennedy’s memoir People Who Led to My Plays, June and Jean In Concert (A Concert of their Lives) introduces us to aspiring writers, June and Jean, twin sisters growing up in Cleveland during World War II, then skips forwards and backwards through time, showing flashes of an everyday family touched by disappointment, tragedy and beauty

For their 3rd In Dialogue Reading of the 2016 Tanya Barfield season, Profile is thrilled to collaborate with CoHo Productions.  Together they will present the work of two game changing African American playwrights, Adrienne Kennedy and Suzan-Lori Parks, whose work has had lasting impact on both the field and on our featured playwright.

July 18-19 in the Artists Rep building, Profile will host the reading of two plays by Adrienne Kennedy.  July 25-26 at CoHo on NW Raleigh Street, they will present a reading of The Book of Grace by Suzan-Lori Parks. The Tuesday night performances (July 19 and July 26) will be interpreted.

This comedic masterpiece spans the entirety of history, with one ordinary American family who lives through it all. Dad’s just invented the wheel, Cain is throwing rocks at the neighbor kid, mammoths and dinosaurs lounge in the family room and mom frets about how to get all those animals on the boat two by two. Through Ice Ages, biblical floods and political conventions, the Antrobus family of Excelsior, New Jersey perseveres. Synopsis: Tennessee Williams’ iconic Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece is an exquisite study of the unraveling of Blanche DuBois, a fading southern belle. When she arrives unexpectedly on the doorstep of her sister, Stella, and her brother-in-law, Stanley Kowalski, Blanche is clinging desperately to a persona designed to help her survive. Over the course of one hot, sultry New Orleans summer, Blanche’s fragile facade slowly crumbles as she meets her match in the rough-hewn and hyper masculine Stanley, who is determined to expose her.

Cast: Demetrius Grosse and Deidrie Henry from NBC’s gripping new drama Game of Silence (premiering on April 12), will take on the roles of Stanley and Blanche in A Streetcar Named Desire. Two other television regulars join them: Stella will be played by Kristen Adele (The Mysteries of Laura and Orange is the New Black, among others) and Mitch will be played by Keith Eric Chappelle (Madam Secretary and Elementary, among others; on Broadway in A Raisin in the Sun and Cyrano de Bergerac). Seven local actors complete the cast: Bobby Bermea, Dana Millican, Gilberto Martin del Campo, Anya Pearson, David Bodin, Sofia May-Cuxim and Blake Stone.

In an industrial soup kitchen in the Bronx, Shelley is a nun struggling to pray and questioning her life’s work. Her world in service to the needy, alongside a Dominican immigrant security guard and joke-writing “regular,” is rocked when a rainbow-haired college drop-out comes to volunteer. The girl’s enthusiasm and erratic behavior will change the course of their lives. With touching humor this motley group unravels the intricacies of need, the vagaries of compassion and limits of forgiveness.
