"Hilarious and deliciously biting, this play brings love, piñatas, and donuts to the fight against injustice, hatred, and oppression in all its flavors (but especially the orange-tinged variety). Writer, performer, and comedian Baruch Porras Hernandez shares stories of his journey as a Queer Latino boy growing up in Toluca, Mexico, and immigrating to California. Using poetry, stand-up comedy, and sweaty go-go dance vibes, Baruch serves up everything from Rainbow Brite realness to Frida Kahlo glitter magic along the way. Love in the Time of Piñatas played to sold-out crowds in San Francisco and this staged reading is a special adaptation for the PCS Remix: Play Reading series. Grab your party hat and get ready to take a bite of this deep-fried, frosted goodness!"

Looking Forward in a Time of Flux

*update 10/15/2020: Theatres are moving into virtual live-streamed and recorded events, a few in-person events with safety protocols + limited audience + distancing. Theater communities are looking for ways to share the work we do during this changing and challenging time - working with new works from BIPOC artists, producing and performing in new ways and avenues. There are some exciting events coming up which will have interpreters on-site and on-screen, as we all navigate this new territory.*

-- original post:

In-person theater for the remainder of the 2019-20 season was cancelled or postponed. The medical  and scientific communities are still monitoring the coronavirus, watching trends, making predictions. We are living in a time of constant flux - globally, nationwide, and locally. There are many conversations happening around performances of all kinds, with the exploration of options and possibilities. New forms are being created or old ones revised. But, for now, live theater in a closed space with 100 or 200 or 800 people is months away; current predictions are 6-18 months. Broadway in NYC announced there will be no productions for the remainder of 2020; other performance venues and companies are following suit. There may not be a 2020-21 season; or there may be a shortened one. One thing is for certain, whatever 2020-21 season we have will be different.

I am continuing to work with a few local theater on providing access for productions as things change. And change again. There are some exciting possibilities ahead - which I can't tell you, yet, because there is still so much which is unknown. Theatre is not dead - it is being adapted to this requirements of this current time we are living in. I will continue to try to share online opportunities as they become available, as new forms are created and shared, as I find new Deaf productions being shared. I look forward to the time when we can be in the room together, sharing laughter and breath and tears and surprise and wonder with the actors on the stage and tech crew in the booth and backstage. Until that time, let's keep our creativity alive and support the efforts of each other as we navigate distancing and face masks and large gathering bans.

Deafinitely Theatre's "Love's Labour's Lost"

While we're waiting out the pandemic to see what the situation is going to look like for theatre and performing arts when we start transitioning out of stricter social distancing guidelines, I will be searching for videos of Deaf performance to share. This seems like a great start, one of Shakespeare's early comedies!

SparkNotes has an online study guide for this play if you want more information.

Deafinitely Theatre's production of Love's Labour's Lost
performed in British Sign Language at The Globe Theatre.

love’s labour’s lost

by william shakespeare

Presented at Shakespeare's Globe for the World Shakespeare Festival in May 2012, Deafinitely Theatre and Shakespeare’s Globe’s production of Love's Labour's Lost then toured the UK as part of the Globe to Globe Festival, in which each of Shakespeare's 37 plays were shown in a different language. By translating the rich, pun-riddled text of Love's Labour's Lost into the physical language of BSL, Deafinitely Theatre created a new interpretation of Shakespeare's comedy, accessible to theatregoers of all backgrounds. This is the first time this has been attempted with a full Shakespeare play.

The court of Navarre: the King and his three Lords vow to stay away from wine, women and luxury; but when the princess and her ladies from France arrive, they begin to change their minds. As each gives in to his affections and breaks his oath, they all try – unsuccessfully - to keep their love secret from each other.

Love’s Labour’s Lost was filmed at Shakespeare’s Globe.

2019-20 season update (4/2/20)

[update 04/02/2020]  As the US tries to flatten the curve, slow the spread and respond to COVID-19, many people are feeling the impact as there are curfews and gathering bans. Theater and other arts organizations are making difficult decisions or being mandated to close. As of 04/02/2020 it is unknown how long the "stay in" order will last, or when we can begin returning to theatres and movies and soccer matches and more. As of right now, the government has recommended a "stay home" policy through the end of April.

Almost all regular season productions have cancelled. NW Children's Theater and School is actively trying to reschedule Suessical and the Elephant & Piggie Tour, but as of now, any shows in April have been cancelled.

If you already have tickets to any of the interpreted performances, you can check the theatre's website to see how they are handling exchanges, their refund policy in terms of this situation. You may also opt to donate the ticket cost to the theater in most cases - an easy way to help support the theaters who have had to go dark and cancel a large chunk of their seasons.

BARDO | Delicate Fish - interpreted 2/28/2020

*posted at performers' request; any questions or for additional information, contact the performers at links provided below*
BARDO | Delicate Fish
February 27 - March 7, 2020 at Shaking The Tree Theatre
Friday Feb 28th includes ASL interpretation

Portland, OR - In the stall of winter, two solo pieces, “BARDO”, a dance theater piece by Lyra Butler-Denman, and “Delicate Fish”, a dance piece by Jess Evans, are presented alongside and in communication with one another.

To die is a process whose edges are feathered in all directions.
To grieve is to feel love that has nowhere to go.
To heal is to touch with love that which was previously touched by fear.

BARDO - A conversation and a conjuring, BARDO embodies the transition states of dying, of grieving, of a relationship moving from the physical plane to existing, maybe (we hope), somewhere else. It reckons with the lack of guideposts, the emptiness and loneliness after a death, and with the active process of filling that space, of making a map where there is none. Trailer here
(BARDO is approximately 80 minutes long and includes an original score by Ahmond
Delicate Fish - An offering of dance to call in an ocean of tenderness. Trailer here
(Delicate Fish is 30 minutes long with music design by D.L. Frazer)

When: February 27, 28 (ASL), 29 & March 5, 6, 7 @ 7:30
Where: Shaking The Tree Theater
