INTERPRETERS: Taiwo Olopade & Lo Aviles

Like diving into a glorious pool of water, this play suspends you with its bright humor and healing depth.

When Janice is pressed to return to her hometown and speak at a ceremony honoring her father, she has to reconcile with the childhood she’s tried to distance herself from and forget — one defined by her parents’ political activism and fight for the integration of their local swimming pools. Drawing on history that spans from 1930s segregation to the Rodney King trial and beyond, this deeply moving story explores the joys and challenges of forgiveness, justice, and the weight of one’s family legacy. Written by Tony Award-nominated playwright Christina Anderson, this gorgeous play was just selected as the winner of the coveted Horton Foote Prize!

“Anderson is a gifted playwright you want to pay attention to. She has the voice of a poet.” –Variety

*ASL cancelled* ART's "The Hombres" interpreted 9/30/2022

Artists Repertory Theatre presents
an interpreted performance of

ASL interpretation is cancelled
due to COVID infection in the interpreting team.

The Friday 9/30 performance will continue; but it will not be interpreted.

The Hombres

Date & Time: Friday, September 30th at 7:30 pm
Tickets: Pay at your comfort level $20-60
Location: Ellen Bye Theatre at The Armory (lower level)
128 NW Eleventh, Portland OR 97209

summary:
Set in New Jersey, The Hombres offers a delicate, funny exploration of masculinity and intimacy of male friendships. Three Latino construction workers are drawn to the yoga studio, initially by voyeuristically watching women in classes from their job site next door. Gradually, their curiosity draws them in, one by one, to private, after-hours classes with the gay instructor whose sexual orientation challenges their machismo and sense of self. A laugh out loud, fresh, nuanced look at the complexity of male friendships through the lens of the machismo culture.
Artists Repertory Theatre is committed to protecting the health and well-being of patrons, artists, and staff. All patrons to ART events must wear face masks at all times except when eating or drinking in designated areas.

ART's "Importance of Being Earnest" interpreted 6/10/17

an interpreted performance of

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST

By Oscar Wilde
Directed by Michael Mendelson

DATE: Saturday, June 10 at 2:00 pm
LOCATION: 1515 SW Morrison, Portland OR
Alder Stage (lower level)
TICKETS; *use code ASL for community discount*
Interpreters: Dot Hearn and Kassie Hughes

An all-female, all-star Portland cast leads this production of Oscar Wilde’s magnificent 19th Century comedy of manners and social status. Lovely Gwendolyn and adorable Cecily don’t care who they marry as long as his name is Earnest (so manly and respectable!). Jack and Algernon are utterly smitten and only too happy to ditch their given names to bamboozle their way into the ladies’ hearts. Imperious Lady Bracknell is aghast, agog and practically apoplectic, but her efforts to impose propriety prove useless against Cupid’s earnest truth. High jinx, bon mots and cucumber sandwiches are served.

"A trivial comedy for serious people.” - Oscar Wilde

A fresh take on an enduring farcical masterpiece
