Seeking a Deaf Female Actor for
Idaho Shakespeare Festival’s 2015 Idaho Theater for Youth Tour

Paid 13-week contract, beginning February 2nd and ending May 1st of 2015, all happening in Boise and surrounding parts of Idaho. This is a nationwide search - if selected, you will be flown to Boise and we'll arrange your lodging in addition to your salary. There are 3 hearing actors in the play that will tour with this show as well. The first 3 weeks of the contract are rehearsal, and the rest of the 10 weeks is the actual touring all over the state of Idaho and performing the play in elementary schools. We have contracted with a professional performing arts interpreter, who will be with the cast during most of the rehearsal process.

Actor must be 21 years or older, female, look young, and be able to drive. This is a non-equity tour, therefore we cannot cast an equity actor.

"Maggie Lumière and the Ghost Train"

Talented playwright, Dwayne Blackballer, who wrote the ITY touring shows, The Science of Fiction and Air Heart, teams up with Tracy Sunderland, a longtime friend and actress with Idaho Shakespeare Festival, to create a new masterpiece, Maggie Lumière and the Ghost Train.

Maggie loves making movies. She has always seen what others miss; the intricacies of Charlie Chaplin’s walk or the way shadow gives way to light. She’s also deaf, but this has never stopped her. Determined to make a silent film masterpiece, Maggie, and her intrepid posse of movie-making pals, stumble upon a derelict train yard that seems like an ideal movie set. But their shoot is disrupted when they stumble upon a mysterious railroad car that contains a dangerous secret.

Actor needed for 'Chris' in "Static": Portland OR

Third Rail Repertory Theatre is putting on "Static" by Dan Rebellato as part of their 2014-15 season. 

They are still looking for an actor to play Chris, a late deafened male who eventually learns sign language. The character is late 30s to early 40s. The actor needs to speak and sign.

From the playwright:

A young woman's life is thrown into disorder when her husband dies suddenly of a brain haemorrhage. Her ability to cope with her  loss is confused when she discovers a compilation tape, apparently made for her, even though her husband was, by the time he died, profoundly deaf. She begins to believe that he has sent her a message and that even now he is talking to her from beyond death. With the help of her friend, she unravels the secret of the tape. 

Static is written to be performed bilingually, in English and Sign Language. These are two slightly different plays overlaid on each other. Both audiences should be able to enjoy their play but be aware that there is another different play unfolding at the same time. 

The play will run at Third Rail Repertory Theatre from April 24 - May 17, 2015.

Goodman Theatre Casting (Chicago, IL) is working with the Actors Theatre of Louisville to cast TRIBES, a play written by Nina Raine, as part of ATL’s 14-15 season.

We are currently casting the role of BILLY, a man in his early/mid-twenties. Billy is the lone deaf member of a hearing family, was taught to lip read by his mother at a very young age, and is only now learning sign. We are searching for a deaf or hard of hearing actor who is ASL fluent and voices to play this role.

Production description:

Billy is the youngest of three adult siblings in a boisterous family. He was born deaf to a hearing family and was raised to lip read, but has never really been heard. When he meets Sylvia, who is losing her hearing and grew up using sign language, he is introduced to new perspectives that tug at the bonds that have defined his life until now. Tribes is an emotionally charged drama about the struggle to find a voice when no one’s truly listening, and the power of language to lock us out—or let us in.

BILLY: Open ethnicity, mid-late 20s.  Billy, deaf from birth, has been raised in a hearing family who did not want him to learn to sign, nor participate in the Deaf community and culture. Billy meets a young hearing woman who is now losing her hearing. She is fluent in ASL, having been raised by deaf parents and within the Deaf community. When their lives intersect, Billy discovers his own ability to communicate and desire to learn ASL.  He's charming and quick witted; his family sees him as reserved and a little shy, but only because they aren't paying enough to attention to recognize the funny, outspoken, and complicated young man underneath.  Seeking a deaf or hard of hearing actor who is ASL fluent and voices.

Billy: (Lead) the youngest son in his family, deaf and an expert lip reader, intelligent and compassionate, youthful and inexperienced, recently moved back in with his parents after university, was raised by hearing parents who purposefully kept their son away from other deaf people, so he wouldn't develop a "minority mindset," finds a sense of belonging in the deaf community and in his relationship with Sylvia as she teaches him sign language; role requires extensive sign language.

Artists Repertory Theatre (A.R.T.) presents "Tribes," written by Nina Raine, as a part of their upcoming 2014-15 season. More about the play below.

The more immediate information about the production of "Tribes" here in Portland, OR, is that the central character, Billy, is Deaf and A.R.T. is holding open auditions next Tuesday 6/17 and Thursday 6/19 for their 2014-15 season. There will be an interpreter available at the auditions.

AUDITION INFORMATION *check the website for other important information*:

Please prepare two contrasting monologues. One contemporary and one classical, preferably in rhyming verse, not exceeding 5 min total.
