The Shakespeare in the Park series is one of the benchmark cultural events in Central Oregon. Lay It Out Events and Portland’s Northwest Classical Theatre Company are again bringing the Bard back to Bend and Sunriver for three brilliant performances of Shakespeare’s quintessential comedy: Twelfth Night.

All of the trappings are there: A plucky, young heroine disguised as a boy, mistaken identities, happy marriages, and perhaps the bawdiest joke in all of his plays! Twelfth Night is a comedy that’s not afraid to wear its heart on its sleeve.

ABOUT THE PLAY AND THIS PRODUCTION:

"Describing the play as a culture clashing, political love story, director Elizabeth Huffman draws on her Arabic roots, her lifelong fascination with Roman history and an avid interest in today’s multicultural landscape to examine Shakespeare’s most complex adult love story.

For this production she weaves together elements of three periods of time: the ancient world of the play, the Shakespearean world that it was written in, and the modern world that we live in now to illuminate the themes and questions embedded in the play: What happens when two powerful rulers from vastly different cultures, ideologies and political agendas dare to fall in love? Is it romantic destiny or political suicide? Have we changed the way we deal with that question today?

Featuring live Arabic and contemporary music, an outstanding international cast, a mystical Soothsayer, additional text from Kahil Gibran and John Dryden’s play All for Love, combined with a stellar design team and a beautiful evening setting in the park, we are excited to share this unique production with you."

"Tribes" at Artists Repertory Theatre : Auditions and more

Artists Repertory Theatre (A.R.T.) presents "Tribes," written by Nina Raine, as a part of their upcoming 2014-15 season. More about the play below.

The more immediate information about the production of "Tribes" here in Portland, OR, is that the central character, Billy, is Deaf and A.R.T. is holding open auditions next Tuesday 6/17 and Thursday 6/19 for their 2014-15 season. There will be an interpreter available at the auditions.

AUDITION INFORMATION *check the website for other important information*:

Auditions: June 17, 2014, 9am – 5pm
Auditions: June 19, 10am – 4pm

Please prepare two contrasting monologues. One contemporary and one classical, preferably in rhyming verse, not exceeding 5 min total. 

Bring two copies of your headshot and resume. 

AEA ACTORS

NON-AEA ACTORS
Open call. Audition slots with be assigned on a first come, first serve basis on the day of auditions.

Tribes is "A contemporary drama that centers on Billy, the only deaf member of a competitively comedic and intellectual family. Unsupported by his parents and siblings, he reaches out to the deaf community and learns sign language, creating funny but fierce tensions at home. Billy finally confronts his childhood resentments, while he and his family struggle with the intricacies of language and the human need to belong to a tribe."  The play will run February 3 - March 8, 2015 at Artists Repertory Theatre in Portland, Oregon.

Lizzie Borden, who has become fodder for jump rope rhymes and TV movies of the week, was a Massachusetts woman who was acquitted in 1892 of the ax murders of her father and stepmother, and lived the rest of her life as American’s first infamous tabloid star. But did she really do it? And if so, why?"

The estimated run time is one hour and 45 minutes, including one intermission.

An emotionally powerful and intimate musical about two New Yorkers in their twenties who fall in love. The title is not only a reference to their relationship, but also a call to the structure of the play itself, with the element of time folding in on itself and echoing the sometimes disorienting quality of love. Cathy tells her story of the courtship backwards, while Jamie tells his story chronologically. Will these two manage to hold on to their prize?

The estimated run time is 90 minutes with no intermission. As usual with Studio productions, there will be no late seating.

Profile Theatre Playwright for 2015

On March 15th, in a creative and fun post-show event, Profile Theatre announced the playwright for 2015 : Sarah Ruhl. The specific plays will be announced in the upcoming months.

From the Profile Theatre website:

Forty-year-old Illinois native and MFA recipient from Brown University (2001), Sarah Ruhl’s original plan was poetry, but was convinced to switch to playwriting studying under Paula Vogel. She began her first play at age twenty-one. The worlds in which her characters live are none-to-far from our own. But the magic she creates comes from a place that Ruhl describes best for herself, “I like to see people speaking ordinary words in strange places, or people speaking extraordinary words in ordinary places.”  Just as she’s able to bridge the vast and the life-sized, the straightforward and the artful, Ruhl can seemingly fuse the lyrical and the starkly dramatic.
